Thermal analysis of selected root canal sealers
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 3
Abstract
Aim of the study: To investigate the effect of a rise in temperature on mass changes of three root canal sealers available on the market.Material and methods: The examined materials included: silicone-based Roeko Seal Automix, methacrylate resin Epiphany, and epoxy resin sealer AH Plus. Six samples of each material were tested for their thermal behaviour when heated from room temperature to 500°C in a derivatograph apparatus. This study utilized the following thermal analysis methods: thermogravimetry (TGA), derrivative thermogravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The obtained data were statistically processed using the ANOVA and Tukey’s tests at the 0.05 significance level. Results: The RSA material displayed the highest mass loss although the process had the slowest course. The Epiphany sealer took the shortest time to burn out, but its loss of mass was smaller than that of the RSA sealer. The AH Plus paste demonstrated the highest thermal stability. Conclusion: Considering the scope of the study Roeko Seal Automix was characterized by the highest loss of mass whereas AH Plus proved to be the most stable one in this respect.
