“This Vessel Was Manufactured for Holy Water...”: on the Characteristics of Rector Feodosiy Gugurevych Times

Journal Title: Київська Академія - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue

Abstract

The history of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy for the second part of the 17th century is insufficiently developed even for the specific facts available at present. Currently it is little known about the Kyivan professors and rectors of that time. The person of Rector Feodosiy Gugurevych (the 1680s) remains understudied. From the 1860s historians describe Feodosiy as an amoral monk who brought Collegium and Confraternal school monastery to the extreme poverty. A singular source for conclusions like these presents an adverse character suggested by Archbishop Feofan (Prokopovych) in his letter of 1736. The scope of Prokopovych’s statements raise doubts as unreliable. The engraving from the silver holy-water basin which was manufactured at the Confraternal monastery’s expense in 1686 during the time of Superior Gugurevych and is currently exposed at the National museum of history of Ukraine strengthens doubts about discourtesy of Prokopovych’s conclusions. Examination of the engraving allows to say that there are no reasons to make an inference about the extreme poverty of the monastery and College. Then this inference helps both to evaluate critically Prokopovych’s negative characteristics of the school leaders and to analyze the reasons of Archbishop’s intents to say about Gugurevych like this.
