Abstract
For many people, death is the most essential provocation, the greatest uncertainty. Death does not only concern the event of the body ending to exist; it also touches the “beyond”. Being ine xplicable and ungraspable, death is often approached in metaphors, allegories and images. Different peoples, cultures and religions have created all kinds of conceptions to describe it. In many of these, death is portrayed as a door to a new life; but there are also those that simply define it as the ultimate end. And yet others characterise it as nurturing the appreciation of life, as the riddance of worldly burdens or as a travel ticket to other places. Thus are the approaches to the phenomenon of death in art, literature, music and rituals, according to different ages
