ГЛАДІАТОРСЬКІ БОЇ ЯК ВИДОВИЩЕ: ВІД РИТУАЛЬНО-СИМВОЛІЧНИХ ДО СОЦІАЛЬНО-ПОЛІТИЧНИХ СМИСЛІВ

Abstract
The article deals with gladiatorial games (fence-play) as one of the most popular pageantries of Ancient Rome. They passed a long way in their evolution, which was accompanied by changes in their cultural forms, social functions and political role. The prototype of the bloody entertainment implied the ritual fights for the remembrance of the dead. Subsequently, these games lost their ritual-symbolic meaning. Their organization passed into the hands of government officials. The latter perceived fights of gladiators not only as a duty, but also as a convenient opportunity to conquer the popular adherence. In the era of the Empire, the games control was laid upon the emperor. The battle in the arena served for the Caesar not only as a means of the personal interests’ satisfaction, but also as a way for reducing of the social tension. By the end of the Roman Empire, gambling had ceased to be an important part of the domestic policy of the authorities, and the latter voided the pageantry, partly under the growing influence of Christian ideas.
