Abstract

Abstract Prostitution is an institution whose roots go to the first time periods on history. The most fundamental base depends on the myth that prostitution is inevitable and natural for each and every society. Regardless of whichever the society or the time period is, what constitutes the essence of the prostitution is the domination of men over women and the instrumentalization of women by men. In this process, women have been made a scapegoat by being declared as the source of prostitution, but men have been considered as innocent. The myths used to normalize prostitution in the society while portraying women as being corrupt, the source of any sickness and indecency, lustful and hooked on money, they think the prostitution as being an instrument of prestige and sexual education for men and also a charity as to provide economical and therapeutic help for women. In this context, with 44 women who work both in the streets and also in the whorehouse in Mersin were interviewed on topics ranging from their life stories to work conditions, from their emotional conditions to anticipations for the future. According to the findings of this study, the prostitution bazaar both serves to normalize the prostitution and the exploitation of women by seeing her as a sexual object, and also bring along the economical, emotional and sexual exploitation of women in a multi-faceted web of relationships.
