«TOTAL HOMELESSNESS» IN HERTA MÜLLER’S WORKS

Abstract

The article is devoted to Herta Müller‟s works which belong to the «migrant literature». The author‟s creative activity represents the «minority literature» of German-speaking writers who originate from Rumania. The analyzed works tell about the process of enforced emigration because of political oppression, persecutions, victimizations (caused by the totalitarian regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu in the 20th century in Rumania). The aim of this study is to show the tragic destiny of a migrant who is doomed to stay on the verge of different cultures (in the third, hybrid space according to Thomas Pekar). This situation becomes the main reason for the migrant‟s feeling of total homelessness and sharpens the question of perception, conception and the interpretation of the term «homeland». The system methodological approach which consists of biographical and sociological methods as well as of Clifford Geertz‟s concept “culture as text” has been applied in the article. The biographical method was used for the study of close connections between Herta Muller‟s autofictional works and her own migration experience. The sociological method has become the basis for the main oppositions the article deals with: minority/native population, small/big/historical homeland and the representation of socio-political problems (life under dictatorship conditions, influence and consequences of the national socialist politics et al.). According to Clifford Geertz‟s concept «culture as text» different anthropological migrant phenomena can be represented and analyzed on the textual level (in this particular situation the material is Herta Müller‟s works). The results of the research can be used not only in literary criticism but also in other fields such as political, sociological or cultural studies.
