TRACING PASTORAL NOMADS IN TOURISM

Abstract

With the Neolithic Revolution, humankind adopted a sedentary life by putting wheat in agriculture, taming sheep and goat, and setting up permanent villages in the Near East. On the other hand, nomad communities, accepted that they emerged during the transition process to settled life of hunter - gatherers communities or in the result of the process and haven’t indigenized settled life, have continued their lives within the limited area. Today’s pastoral nomads, cultural extension of the nomads, have been continuing their existence in the area from Zagros Mountains in Iran to Southeast, Central and West Taurus Mountains in Anatolia within a historical continuity in too many difficulties. These nomads with different cultural, social and behavioural characteristics have the potential to be tourist attraction element for the destinations where they live in Turkey. The aim of this study is to discuss its relationship with tourism by elaborating its anthropological and folkloric aspects through literature review. For this aim, nomads and nomadism are examined in terms of political, juridical, economical, social, historical, ethno cultural and folkloric aspects and put forwarded its contribution to tourism industry, nomads and nomad culture enthusiasts. The suggestions in the study for protecting and keeping the nomad culture, accepted as “Intangible Cultural Heritage”, are considered to be guidance role for all stakeholders of tourism industry.
