Traduire l’argot français par des mots issus de l’italien régional. Quelques exemples tirés de la traduction de La petite marchande de prose de Daniel Pennac

Abstract

Can the regional Italian prove useful for translation of the French typical argot? Over the course of time, argot has moved from a diastratic variation to a diaphasic variation. Nowadays, argot is often used in literature more in order to shape a character’s identity or to modulate his expressiveness, rather than for marking his social status. What does this change imply in translation? Through an anal-ysis of the uses of argot in Daniel Pennac’s novel La petite marchande de prose (Write to Kill, 1999), this paper considers the solutions adopted in its Italian translation La prosivendola by Yasmina Melaouah. The choice of some words and expressions derived from the regional Italian (dialettismi) but which are now part of the national Italian is a possible way for translating argot: the italiano regionale has a lighter diatopic connotation than Italian dialects have and it is more and more used for expressiveness purposes by Italian speakers. This change place the italiano regionale in a situation comparable with the French ar-got. The authors’ suggestion is that literary translators who have to deal with the translation of argot into Italian can exploit this resource.
