L’antonomase du nom propre, un gros mot politique comme les autres ?

Journal Title: Argotica - Year 2013, Vol 0, Issue 1

Abstract

This study aims to show how and why antonomastic insults played for many years such a central role in political discourses. Even if many of their characteristics make of them the political insult par excellence (we could mention its illocutionary objectives, its minor contribution to the discursive frame and its extreme dependence on the context), antonomasia differs from other insults because of a number of features not less substantial, which justifies its continued success in a political world where critics note a relative rarefaction of insults. The specificities of this figure are primarily derived from the originality of its location between two subcategories of the noun: the proper noun and the common noun. The proper noun provides the comfort and freedom of its relative absence of meaning, an essential function of designation, and a semantic instability which allows for various subjectivities to be projected onto it, while the common noun brings the power of categorization, but also the possibility of a varied complementation. After proposing a few lines of analysis for the development of a typology of antonomastic insults, this article will attempt to understand the phenomenon in its historical context proper, in a reflection which is above all an invitation to further pursue this work.
