Transactional Coping Experiences of Persons Deprived of Liberty During COVID-19 Pandemic

Journal Title: Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal - Year 2023, Vol 9, Issue 8

Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to explore the coping experiences of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Utilizing interpretative phenomenological analysis, the study focused on three PDLs at the Bureau of Jail Management Penology CALABARZON. By adopting a phenomenological approach, the study sought to understand the lived experiences of PDLs. The findings revealed that PDLs faced stringent protocols, including quarantine measures and limited visitation hours. However, the BJMP management provided medical support to the PDLs. Various coping mechanisms were observed among the participants, encompassing physical, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive strategies. Ultimately, the study concluded that PDLs developed adaptive coping mechanisms that enabled them to navigate stressors like Covid-19 in their environment. To enhance the coping mechanisms of PDLs, the researchers proposed five action plans for BJMP management, including livelihood program trainings and psychological assessments and consultations.
