TRANSLATION OF DOCUMENT TITLES IN THE FIELD OF INTERNATIONAL LAW (BASED ON THE MATERIAL OF GERMAN AND UKRAINIAN INTERNATIONAL TREATIES)

Abstract
The article deals with the main strategies of translation of international treaties and provides the classification of translation techniques, with reference to which the analysis of the translation ofdocument titles in the field of international law on the lexical, grammatical and semantic levels has been lead. The translation analysis is based on the authentic texts of German and Ukrainian international treaties. The particular attention is given to semantic translation techniques, in particular the interlingual semantic disparities are mentioned, which can cause the traps of internal form. The single role in the overcoming of semantic difficulties in translation is devoted to extralingual knowledge. In general, the lexical substitution combined with permutation is typical for the translation of document titles in the field of international law. The translation technique permutation is used for the attainment of equal share of parties to an agreement. The text cohesion means (represented by prepositions) in the document titles can be rendered by lexical substitution (über, zu) or can be omitted by reduction (von). In addition to the reduction of preposition von the translation technique transposition is used (e.g. Charta von Paris – Paryz’ka Khartiia (in Ukrainian), Schlussakte von Helsinki – Hel’sins’kyi Zakliuchnyi akt (in Ukrainian)). It is to point out, that the translation techniques are complex, and they are used at the same time on different levels. For example, in the document title das Übereinkommen vom 7. März 1966 zur Beseitigung jeder Form von Rassendiskriminierung – Konventsiia pro likvidatsiiu vsikh form rasovoi dyskryminatsii vid 7 bereznia 1966 roku (in Ukrainian) the lexical substitution, permutation, reduction, intracategorial conversion and modulation are used. Among the semantic translation techniques, the explication aims at the detailing of semantic content of a document title. On the other hand, the implication is used for irrelevant information omitting. The traps of internal form occur in the translation of such lexemes as Dokument, Erklärung, Protokoll etc. The search of translation solution becomes more complicated due to the notion synonymy in German and restricted lexical possibilities in Ukrainian (e.g. Vorschriften, Regelungen, Bestimmungen are translated as polozhennia (in Ukrainian)). The involving of extralingual knowledge is effective for the defining of semantic meaning of a particular lexeme in order to omit the possible traps of internal form. The perspective way of semantic research of legal terms could be the investigation of document titles translation (e.g. Urkunde, Zeugnis, Bescheinigung, Attest, Ausweis, Pass etc.) in juristic texts of common use.
