Turkey Based Articles in Three Important Journals on Medical Education Area

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: The aim of this study is to determine Turkey based articles published in three international journals on medical education area and the changing situation after establishing medical education departments in medical schools. Methods: First, all articles including “Turkey” and Turkish names in Medical Teacher, Academic Medicine and Medical Education journals were analyzed by using three search engines PubMed, Google Scholar and ISI Web of Knowledge. Then the articles were classified by titles and abstracts according to their relation to medical education concept. The selected articles were grouped according to their publication years and theme. The results were presented in a table as frequencies and percentages. Results: There were 193,710 articles including “medical education” keyword in first search beginning at 1966. The analyses were performed again using “Turkey” noun as a filter key and then the number of articles was reduced to 1,274. These articles were searched in detail according to their titles and subjects in abstracts if they are in a relation to medical education and the articles about education on other health professionals as veterinary, nursing etc. were excluded. Seven of remained 53 articles were published before 2000. Eleven of selected articles were about curriculum, three of them were about PBL, 19 of them were about education methods and 12 of them were about students’ well-being. Thirty articles of total selected articles were designed as qualitative studies. Conclusion: It is known that it is very difficult to be published an article in a journal on medical education area. The acceptance rate of articles is below 10% in three journals mentioned above. The obligation of academic promotion seems to be a barrier for academicians and researchers on medical education area.
