Abstract

Pupils of the Lublin School in the Battles for independence and the borders of the Polish state during World War I and the Polish-Soviet war In 1936 Stefan Batory Private Men’s Gymnasium in Lublin, called the Lublin School, celebrated 30 years of existence. On this occasion the Jubilee book was released which contains information about the students – participants of the fighting for independence and Polish borders in the years 1914–1920. The pages of this publication contain recollections of the School’s Military Corps members – a paramilitary organization created among the male students from schools in Lublin. There are also biographies and photographs of the first members of the school Zawisza Czarny Scout team striving for Polish independence. Many of them had fallen during the World War I, fighting in the Polish Legions. Others were killed in the time of the Polish-Soviet war, serving the homeland in the ranks of the reborn Polish Army. Some died at an early age, as a result of the diseases fatal for young organisms afflicted with the hardships of war. An example is the destiny of Longin Gładyszewski – Lublin School graduate, Boy Scout, commissioned officer in the Polish Army. In 1917 he was imprisoned in the camps in Szczypiorno and Łomża, and later participated in the fighting in Volhynia and Polesie, Commander in the 23 infantry regiment branch, killed on 13 June 1920 during the Bolsheviks’ attack on a village Jamny near Dyneburg.
