UKRAINIAN AND POLISH NATIONALISM OF THE 20–30’s YEARS OF THE 20th CENTURY: THE BEGINNING OF THE CONFRONTATION

Abstract

The article reveals the policy of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and Polish nationalist parties regarding the attitude to the national question in Poland in the 20’s and 30’s of the 20th century. The works of the Ukrainian historians P. Mirchuk, Z. Knysh, I. Lysyak-Rudnytsky, A. Kentiy, O. Bagan, I. Fedyk, V. Khodak and the Polish scientists R. Vapinsky, E. May, A. Khoinovsky, E. Maychrovsky, V. Mikh and others were used. The archival material, program docu-ments of the parties, periodical press of that time and the works of leading politicians form the source base of the investigation. In the early 30’s of the 20th century nationalist ideology has become dominant in the Polish and in the Ukrainian political movement. The main program principles of the Polish National Democrats (Endeks) and the OUN were analyzed in the research. The direct collision between them began with the repressive and punitive action of the Polish government – the “pacification” of 1930 in Galicia. Endeks defended their incorporation program of transforming the strengthening of the Polish influences on ethnic Ukrainian lands by the practical means. In the 1930’s there was a radicalization of the Polish nationalist movement. The “young camp”, headed by E. Giertekh, and a number of small pro-fascist factions, who viewed the Ukrainians through the prism of eliminating of their national characteristics and identities was formed in the midst of the Endeks. Revolutionary methods of the struggle became the basis for the radical wing of the OUN, led by S. Bandera. The existence of the Ukrainian and Polish nationalist movements was caused by objective historical factors. In conditions of constant political struggle, the existence of the Polish nationalist parties and the OUN became mutually beneficial for both sides, but to a greater extent for the Polish one. The radicalization of the nationalist movement has shown the impossibility of the peaceful coexistence of the Ukrainian and Polish nationalism with existing ideological thesis and principles in the territory of the Western Ukraine. Actually it was shown by the events of the Second World War.
