Ultrasonic Phased Array Testing and Probability of Detection Quantitative Analysis of Polyethylene Pipe Butt Fusion Joints

Abstract

The customized polyethylene test block was designed with transverse hole defects at depths of 10 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm, 30 mm, 35 mm, 40 mm, whose diameters were 1 mm and 2 mm respectively. Then probability of detection ( POD) quantitative analysis method was carried out based on ultrasonic phased array technology. The results show that 2. 25 MHz probe can achieve better detection result for larger defects, compared with 5. 00 MHz probe. For the 95% lower confidence bound, the 2. 25 MHz probe and 5. 00 MHz probe can inspect 1 mm diameter cross-hole defect depth of 26. 21 mm and 14. 98 mm with 90% POD level, respectively.
