Underground printing and storehouses of OUN (b) in Kamianets-Podilskyi region (1948-1951)

Abstract

The article analyzes activity of the underground mini-printing houses of Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists commanded by Bandera (OUN (B)) in Kamianets-Podilskyi region. Using the archives of the NKVD the article highlights their editorial and publishing work, content of underground editions. The article reveals the spreading of nationalist literature and its role in education of the national population. It is worth noticing that nationalist underground activity in 1948-1949 was devoted to ideological and educational work among the population: Ukrainian historical traditions were promoted, folklore rebel, the inhumane nature of the Stalinist totalitarian regime also was exposed. The instrument of propaganda of Kamianets-Podilskyi district provid of OUN and nadrayonnyi structures became publications such as books, brochures, magazines, leaflets, published in the illegal printing houses of Podillia or came from Western Ukraine. Especially productive was the work of printing house honored by Jaroslav Starukha that was located in the village Tovste Zalischykyi district Ternopil region, and its technical sections on the left side of Zbruch – in the village Piatnychany Oryninskyi district and in Kozak Dovzhotskyi district Kamianets-Podilskyi region. A great number of prints preserved in conspiratorial storehouses, where small parts came to nadrayonnyh provid, and then to the local population. According to the materials of MGB, in the early 1950s production of underground nationalist literature has decreased sharply. At this time, the majority of leaders of Kamianets-Podilskyi district and nadrayonnyi provid OUN were arrested or liquidated by the Soviet secret services.
