Journal Title: Eminak - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 3

Abstract

The Middle East is becoming an arena of rivalry and struggle of the superpowers for influence in the region in the second half of the 20th century. Its geographical location, wealth of natural resources and geopolitical factors identified strategic role in the Middle East on the agenda of US foreign policy. One of the key issues that raises controversial in the scientific community, as well as US foreign policy is the issue of unification of Kurdistan, the land is located within the borders of 4 countries: Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria. It should be said that the attitude of the United States to the Kurdish question varies according to changes taking place in the United States bilateral relations with the above countries. In foreign policy, the US faced the problem of the Kurds for the first time since the overthrow of the monarchy in Iraq July 14, 1958 change of government in Iraq and the confrontation of the new regime with the United States forced Washington to seek leverage in Baghdad. However, there was a stumbling block in US policy to Iraqi Kurdistan. Support for the United States Kurds in Iraq could intensify the national liberation movement of the Kurds in Turkey, Iran and Syria. This in turn could create significant instability in the region, which would adversely affect the United States.
