Abstract

Phytosociological and habitat analyses of rush communities differing in their moisture content and trophic conditions were conducted in the Noteć Bystra and Noteć Leniwa river valley in the years 2010–2014. Low rushes, mainly large sedge beds from the Magnocaricion alliance, formed at small eutrophic water bodies, but also found in vast fertile flood meadows and less frequently in riverside carrs predominate in the river valley. Their development, floristic diversity, nature and agricultural value are determined first of all by annual flooding and the constant effect of surface waters, resulting from the habitat mosaic, their trophic levels and use intensity. Mean values of the Ellenberg and Oświt indexes for the investigated associations showed a significant effect of moisture content, soil reaction and nitrogen content in the soil on trophic conditions, plant species composition, yields and fodder value as well as species diversity. Due to the high groundwater table and periodically even complete flooding of the area they constitute an extremely valuable, natural ecosystem of diverse and rare plant species and a refuge for many bird and animal species connected with such habitats. Some of them are the most valuable phytocenoses in the Noteć valley, with many specified natural habitats being of European importance and protected by the Natura 2000 network. Natural habitats characterized by high biodiversity are particularly valuable, but at the same time also threatened.
