Abstract
This paper explores a direct correlation between the hero’s journey in search of his father in the long poem “Immram” by Paul Muldoon and the individuation process as described by Carl Jung and Edward F. Edinger psychology. The author analyses only 15 stanzas of the long poem (from 16 up to 30) to show some steps of the hero’s individuation that can be defined as the realization of the Self which is one of the Jungian archetypes, signifying the unification of consciousness and unconsciousness in a person, and representing the psyche as a whole. As the archetype of the Self is expressed in the image of Christ in Jungian psychology, the paper attempts to draw parallels between the teaching statements by Jesus Christ described in the Bible (The New Testament) and the hero’s journey in search of his father. This allows the readers to understand the plot of the poem and see some cultural codes and language signs hidden in the structure of the text. The author interprets the meaning of symbols in relation to the subject of discussion. Author also discusses multiple father figures and shows the postmodern ironic rethinking of religion, myth, psychoanalysis, historical, cultural and ethical observances in the poem. This raises the issue whether it is possible to achieve your authentic Self if the real Father has two-faced nature (God and Satan). The resulting study is an indispensable guide to the understanding of Muldoon’s individual mythology and makes an important contribution to psychoanalytically oriented literary criticism.
