Abstract
The article deals with the investigation of the various aspects in the irony study within the humanitarian knowledge paradigm. Its status has been characterized in the related academic disciplines from antiquity to modernity. The interpretation of the term "irony" in modern linguistics with the emphasis on the significance of this category for linguistic poetics has been proved. Irony is viewed as a kind of comic category which is characterized by the use of words, phrases or sentences in the sense opposite to that expressed in it directly in order to make criticism and the appraisal characteristics of the object or the phenomenon of reality. Modern prose, English in particular, is characterized by a specific comic modality that is a means of the author’s position and estimation expressing. The content of the comic category is a set of its variants, among which irony plays an important role. The levels of irony functioning in the belles-lettres text have been singled out. As the analysis shows, irony functions at the level of the text covert sense (implication), which is a generalized, not tied to separate speech components, content and is the product of numerous underlying meanings reflected in the speech material of the whole text. The textual implementation of irony as a macrofigure (its usage in the broad context, in a certain textual unity) at the implication level takes place due to the totality of the language and stylistic means of its expression at certain speech levels – phonetic, graphical, morphological, lexical and semantic, phraseological, syntactical, etc.
