Views of Secondary School Students About Elective Application of Mathematics Course

Abstract
This study was performed in order to present opinions of 5, 6, 7, and 8th grade students on elective application of Mathematics course. The research is a survey research. Working group of the research includes 80 students at 5, 6, 7, and 8th grade. Students were chosen three different schools in İzmir City. Open-ended questions developed by the researchers, data were collected with semi-structured interviews. With the questions, it was aimed to determine opinions of students on reasons of choosing the course and expectations from the course. Data obtained from semi-structured interviews were analyzed by descriptive analysis method. Answers of students were categorized by transforming descriptive codes. Findings of the study are those; especially 5th grade students chose this course for their families wanted, but the other students chose the course to take a higher note. Expectations of the 5th and 6th grade students have fun while learning, but the other students want to increase their mathematics success. Students presented positive opinion about course and think choosing the course again.
