VIEWS ON TRANSLATION IN THE UKRAINIAN CIVILIZATIONAL SPACE OF THE 16TH CENTURY

Journal Title: ІНОЗЕМНА ФІЛОЛОГІЯ - Year 2017, Vol 130, Issue

Abstract

The 16th century is a transitional period from the manuscript culture to the book printing culture that had an impact on the creation and dissemination of translation views. The overall objective of the paper is to verify the status of the theoretical conceptualization of translation in Early Modern Ukraine. A methodology of studying the historiography of translation works is based on the principles of the general climate of opinion, immanence and relevance. The historiographical analysis also involves an interpretational survey of lexis from the viewpoints of its semantics, history of the Ukrainian language and sociolinguistics enabling us to detect the raison d’être of the relevant terms diversity. Using such sources as the prefaces by Frantsisk Skoryna, Mykhailo Vasyliyevych (in the Peresopnytsia Gospel), Hryhoriy Khodkevych, Vasyl Tiapynskyi, Valentyn Nehalevskyi, Leon Mamonych, as well as the prefaces to the Krekhiv Apostolos and the Ostroh Bible, one can reconstruct the then term-system which describes the perception of translation and the notions of its components and strategies. Translation theory in the 16th c. Ukraine can be considered self-sufficient as it possesses an appropriate number of terms, and is guided by two goals: the accurate reproduction of a text and the satisfaction of the reader’s needs. In the general European sociolinguistic context, when the writers preferred the national vernacular, we observe the desire to secure a high status to the Ukrainian language. The dissemination of translation views and principles shared across Europe at the time is also manifested in the prefaces by the 16th c. Ukrainian translators who recognized the authority of St. Jerome of Stridonia and St. Cyril the Philosopher in translation matters as well as the values of Bible translation voiced at that time by Polish translators.
