A LOVE STORY AND THE ORDERING OF TIBULLUS BOOK I

Abstract
The relation between a love story and the composition of Tibullus Book I is discussed. It is shown that love in Tibullus always appears impeded: the development of a love affair is depicted in such a way that while the physical distance between Tibullus and his beloved is being shortened, the emotional distance increases. The story is not revealed successively through the elegies that creates an effect of poikilia in the book composition. However, a deeper analysis shows a more complicated and well considered circular, symmetrical, wave-like book structure.
