Water Filter Design with a New and Innovative Conceptual Design Process Model
Journal Title: Gazi Üniversitesi Fen Bilimleri Dergisi Part C: Tasarım ve Teknoloji - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 1
Abstract
Conceptual design is the most important phase of engineering design process and the product cost is significantly determined at this phase and it has a direct effect on product innovation. However, academic and commercial design support systems have usually served embodiment and detail phase, namely with the aim of drawing, analysis, simulation. Design authorities envision that new generation CAD/E systems mainly will built on innovative conceptual design. An innovative conceptual design process must be developed in a structure that is comprehensive, systematic and inventive, and that includes all contradictions at the beginning of design. But, actual works being conducted on this subject focus usually on the improvement of existing products and the resolving only a single contradiction. Therefore, they are not sufficient to design especially original and innovative products. To overcome the challenge, we develop a new and innovative conceptual design process. The proposed model consists of Pahl and Beitz’s conceptual design approach, QFD and TRIZ. To prove the usability and the reliability of this model, a design case study is carried out. As a result energy-efficient, low cost, high performance, innovative solutions at the level of patents are obtained. This results show that this design process model will be successful in finding innovative solutions through the example of water filter design.
