WEAR PATTERN TESTING OF CERAMIC COATINGS UNDER RECIPROCATING SLIDING

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 226, Issue 4

Abstract

A ball-on-plate system was used for the investigation of the wear of ceramic coatings. Coated stainless steel balls (Ø 5 mm) were sliding under constant load at a nominal surface pressure of 1,155 GPa on a ceramic coated face of stainless bar moving in a rectilinear reciprocating motion (sliding velocity 0.08 ±0.02 m/s, stroke 40 mm). Ultra thin coatings were tested, particularly DLC modified with a tungsten additive. Sliding contacts were lubricated either with distilled water or with aqueous solution of NaCl. The course of wear of the ceramic coating deposited on the specimen was evaluated by means of optical and scanning electron microscope observations. Prime objects for wear testing were the coated surfaces of stainless steel balls. The reciprocating flat counterface was examined as an auxiliary data source. Wear marks on the balls were elliptical in shape with the longer axis perpendicular to the direction of sliding. In rare cases, circular wear marks were observed. A variety of wear forms were observed: scratches, cracks, delamination, pits and steel substrate exposure. Some of the observed wear forms could be put down to imperfections in the coating. It is proposed that numerous forms of wear encountered should be classified into wear types in a systematic approach, e.g. based on such factors (in the case of crack propagation involving cases) as cause of crack initiation or crack type (instantaneous or fatigue).
