Web based activities in public health: An experience of the website of the department

Abstract
Abstract Background: Aims of the study were to use the website of Hacettepe University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Public Health (http://www.halksagligi.hacettepe.edu.tr) more actively and effectively especially in medical student education, and to inform community about frequently seen public health issues. Materials and Method: Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 software was used in web design. The website’s interface was updated; the content has been varied by student activities, scientific activities and public health information. Results: As compared to the initial phases of the Project, total number of the visitors has tripled at the end. Nearly 40% of the visitors were in 25-34 age group whereas 23% of them were in 35-44 age group. Totally, 1696 visitors displayed 20496 pages in 3726 sessions in two months’ period. 44% of the visitors accessed to the website for the first time and 56% were revisitors. Conclusion: Visitors of the web site increases by time. The subcategories of the website have been improving due to the needs. Work on the website for future are planned to be continued.
