Abstract
The author presents a linguistic and cultural picture of axiological messages conceptualised on the basis of the notions of freedom and independence. The two are closely connected at a semantic and interpretational level and have a clearly marked ethical, political and ideological dimension. The data have been gathered from the interviews with several people who are the oldest country dwellers from the Lublin region. As a result, the author obtains the folk perception of the world, where patriotism and responsibility for the country are much emphasised. Freedom and independence are treated as sacred and entail the notions of service, sacrifice, duty and historical responsibility. The axiological picture of freedom and independence is based upon one’s personal experience and national history.
