WOMEN IN CONNECTION WITH THE VIRTUAL IDENTITY AND THE IDENTITY OF THE VIRTUALIZED BODY: OLGA FLOR’S BLOG-NOVEL “ICH IN GELB”
Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 48
Abstract
The internet as a new information and communication medium of the globalized world has created a virtual environment where public and universal fields emerge and social, gender, national and cultural boundaries disappear. Thus, a dynamic competitive environment, where speed and action are required, incorporates real-life people, commercial goods and services into a circulation that takes place on a universal scale. Today, the new communication technologies which harbor an insatiable desire for consumption, create a world that is constantly eager to see new things. As the processes in this framework are accelerated, 'artificial evaluations' and 'sensations' show up accordingly. Everything that exists within the sensation where objects, events and even people are designed temporarily is being dragged into a void. When individuals start asking questions about their identities and their world views as well as about how the images are designed, they are unable to get a specific answer and become objects of the new means of communication. In the light of all these developments, Olga Flor's blog-novel entitled “Ich in Gelb” combines biology and computer techniques to create a "hybrid" entity, a woman called Bianca whose body is presented to the audience of this virtual environment as a physical sensation. The image of the virtual identity of the first person narrator, who transmits the sensational event of Bianca to the reader and audience in her own fashion-blog, whose nickname nextGirl is in virtual space, is dealt with in this article.
