Women in the Postmodern Museum

Abstract
Museum, defined as a cultural institution which classifies and exhibits the past and present cultures and communities’ power and status, has become a cultural institute which uses its activity for the education and socialization for the masses with the ideological influence of postmodern thought in recent years. Postmodern thought as a part of a cultural shift and sentiment change in Western societies, has caused a visible transformation in practice and discourse and started a collage life in various area of community life. Close attention to different tendencies and diversities which were paid by postmodern thought has led to improvements and revolution in museology. Associating time and place through converting time into a place reflects in the understanding on contemporary museology. Nowadays experiences, based of the objects, from several displays and exhibitions are strongly emphasized in the postmodern museums than ever before. In this context, the most prominent feature of the contemporary museum is its containing a lot of different objects which have variety of tenses, backgrounds and forms. Since 1960 with feminism , “woman” has stood as aa element of cultural diversity and named as sexual and ethnic “other” (gays, blacks, minorities and ethnic groups etc) in the community for the museums. Woman museums and women’s history museums, in the motto of cultural diversity, are founded to contribute feminism and women’s rights. Their works influence variety of museums in the politics of researching, collecting, exhibiting, educating and outreach efforts. In this study, the understanding of postmodern museum is emphasized with the analysis of museum collections, contemporary exhibitions, understanding of diversity and pluralism through the fact of woman as a part of museums of woman and other type of museums.
