WORLD HERITAGE LIST AND VESPASIANUS- TITUS TUNNEL–AN EVALUATION ON THE PROCESS

Abstract
In this study, place of Turkey in The World Heritage List and the potential of a cultural heritage which is in the Tentative List to be nominated for the World Heritage List is examined. First of all, the criteria which are prepared by the UNESCO and World Heritage Committee are considered and heritage in Turkey and the studies on this subject are investigated. Then, Vespasianus-Titus Tunnel is examined according to information and data which are obtained from trips to the region and compared with similar examples according to their qualities. As the Vespasianus Titus Tunnel built during the Roman period is one of the most unique remains because of its relation with the ancient city of Selecuia Pieria and distinguished engineering features, it is in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. Therefore it is one of the unique examples of Roman period and a peculiar structure being survived until today without any damage. Its acceptance to the World Heritage List and conservation will be beneficial not only for Turkey but also for humanity and universality of heritage.
