Występowanie wędrownych i reofilnych gatunków ryb i minogów w rzekach północnej Polski w świetle historycznych materiałów do początku XX wieku
Journal Title: Roczniki Naukowe Polskiego Związku Wędkarskiego - Year 2015, Vol 28, Issue
Abstract
The paper contains an analysis of historical sources of the distribution of migratory and rheophilic fish and lamprey species in rivers of northern Poland. In the past, most of these rivers and streams had rich fish fauna, which was manifest in rich catches. Several migratory species, e.g. Atlantic sturgeon and Atlantic salmon, are now extinct. In addition, some local populations of several rheophilic species have disappeared, while the species of vimba, barbel, nase and burbot are the most threatened. Brown trout has always been the most common species. However, as the historical materials relate primarily to commercial species, it is difficult to analyse them as regards other, smaller species. Generally, the status of the presently described species is worse than those of historical data. Dams and stream channel regulation are the main causes of the decline. These habitat changes were most intense in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but effects are visible today.
