XFEM simulation on mixed-mode fatigue crack growth of functionally graded materials

Journal Title: Journal of Mechanical Engineering and Biomechanics - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

In present study, XFEM simulation has been carried out to investigate the fatigue life of a functionally graded material (FGM) made of aluminum alloy and alumina (ceramic) under cyclic mixed mode loading. Effect of presence of minor cracks, holes and inclusions of arbitrary sizes are randomly located in the domain along with the major crack is also investigated. Paris law is used to evaluate the fatigue life of the aluminum alloy, FGM and equivalent composite.
