YOUTUBE VIDEOS IN ESP INSTRUCTION OF PHILOSOPHY STUDENTS

Abstract

Authenticity of foreign language input has turned into one of 21st century foreign language instruction trends. An important variety of unadapted materials which can be used in class is films and videos made available to EFL teachers due to advances in computer technologies. Moving images, cultural component, and story behind pictures are the factors that increase students’ motivation and thus make language learning more meaningful and engaging for students. Both a challenge and benefit for teachers though is that from a vast array of authentic materials available today, they have to choose the ones which would meet their students’ needs and expectations. Based on an ESP class taught to philosophy students, this article offers a suggestion on a possible use of a short philosophy lecture by a Canadian university professor to enhance students’ listening and speaking skills.
