Abstract

This paper presents selected findings of the study «Health Index. Ukraine» conducted in 2017, in particular we focus here on the subjective assessment of health in Ukraine and willingness to take care of personal health. Also, the self-esteem of health varies largely between different socio-demographic groups as the social gradient of health and linked to it healthy behavior are considered as the important final indicators of health policy and health care system performance. The second wave of the survey was conducted in May-June 2017. The sample is representative for the adult population (18+ years) of Ukraine as a whole, as well as for each oblast of Ukraine and Kyiv city. In total, 10,205 respondents were interviewed and the personal face-to-face interviews were conducted by the qualified interviewer. Depending on personal experience, respondents were asked maximum of 200 questions related to the assessment of their own health, the perception of the health system, the consumption of medical assistance and pharmaceuticals as well as related to it out-of-pocket payments. People provide mostly positive assessments to their health: 46.5% of respondents considered their health to be good or very good. This share is the smallest in the Sumy region (27.7%), and the largest in Luhansk region (58.7%). Still, 14.6% consider their health bad or very bad. A higher self-estimation of health is noticed among men, younger people, urban area citizens and among people with higher education and income. At the same time, 39.2% of respondents confirm of presence of chronic or long-term conditions and 6.6% of the respondents had a formally certified disability. Concerning the unhealthy behavior, the prevalence of smoking is 23.9% (7.7% for women and 39.6% for men); 8.6% of respondents consume excessively alcohol during the past year (17.5% of men and 1.7% of women) and 55.6% of the respondents are overweight and obese.
