Journal Title: Biografistyka Pedagogiczna - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 1

Abstract

Zofia Grothówna came from Rzeżuśnia, a village currently belonging to the Miechów district in the Małopolska province. Little is known about the early years of the future abbess except that her parents were Aleksander Groth of Rawicz and Katarzyna Kozubska. The exact date of Zofia Grothówna’s birth is also unknown. She became a novitiate in the Cloister in Imbramowice in 1691. After Krystyna Oraczewska, who had been the abbess from 1688, stepped down, Zofia Grothówna was appointed to this position on 7 August 1703 in the presence of priest Dominik Lochman, the archpriest of Cracow and the cloister supervisor, and priest Marcin Węgrzynowicz, the canon of Cracow. Almost throughout the entire period of her offi ce, she was involved in the reconstruction of the sanctuary of the Cloister in Imbramowice after the great fi re that took place on 28 July 1710. She employed the best artists of that time – architect Kacper Bażanka, sculptor Antoni Frączkiewicz and painter Wilhelm Włoch from Cracow – for architectural and interior design work. Zofia Grothówna wrote a cloister chronicle. She was not indiff erent to the fate of her subjects. She gave them cereal and fi nanced the construction of their huts. In 1735, she set up the ‘Hill of Piety’ to lend money to the poor for the purchase of oxen and horses. At that time, there was a cloister school in Imbramowice – an institute for girls. St. Anne’s fraternity of prayer and penance was also established at the cloister under abbess Grothówna. She died on 31 May 1741. She was buried in the sanctuary of the Cloister in Imbramowice.
