Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2018, Vol 11, Issue 55

Abstract

Translation of children’s literature has been an important study field in our country as in the world. However, there are some translation challenges in the translation children’s literature for translators. One of these problems is whether the proper names in the literary work should be translated or not or how they should be translated. The aim of this paper is to analyse the translation strategies of proper names in James Matthew Barrie’s novel Peter Pan from English to Turkish. There are many theatre and film versions of the novel and different translators have translated the book and various publishing houses published the novel many times. To that end, a comparative analysis is carried out between the translations by Nihal Yeğinobalı and Şengül and the preferred strategies used were analysed according to the translation strategies proposed by Eirlys E. Davies (2003) for the translation of culture-specific items and proper names. Finally, the proper names are assessed according to Venuti’s (1995) domestication and foreignization methods in broad sense.
