A correlation study of clinical, biochemical and cytological profile in goitre - Our experience in Melmaruvathur tertiary health care hospital

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: The diagnosis and management of goitre requires both Fine needle aspiration cytology and Thyroid function test. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the common presentation of thyroid lesion and to establish the correlation between clinical, biochemical, cytological findings to have a better idea about pathogenic mechanism behind thyroid pathology. Materials: This was a retrospective data analysis of 84 cases of thyroid lesions. All demographic, clinical, biochemical and cytological reports were collected from hospital laboratory records and statistically analysed. Results: Out of 84 cases studied, Females were predominant (92.9%) and predominant age group affected was between 21-50 years (n=69; 82.2%). The common clinical presentation was diffuse goitre (n=46; 54.8%) followed by solitary nodular goitre (n=31; 37%). Cytological diagnosis of colloid goitre was made for 40.5% cases and thyroiditis in 36.8% cases. Euthyroid status was seen in 60.7% cases. Clinical and cytological correlation showed 58.5% of diffuse goitre diagnosed as thyroiditis and 58.1% of solitary nodule as colloid goitre. Biochemical and cytological correlation showed 73.6% of thyroiditis with hypothyroid and 55% of colloid goitre with euthyroid level. Clinical and biochemical correlation showed 80.6% of solitary nodular goitre with euthyroid status. All the above correlations were statistically significant. (p<0.001). Conclusion: The common presentation was diffuse goitre and euthyroid status with female preponderance between 21-50 years of age. Most of the diffuse goitre were thyroiditis and associated hypothyroid status. Most of the solitary nodule were colloid goitre and associated euthyroid status.
