A METHOD AND TESTING MACHINE FOR SURFACE FATIGUE LIFE (PITTING) INVESTIGATION

Abstract

The developed and verified test method, which is presented in the paper, is destined for surface fatigue life investigation of concentrated, lubricated friction joints with elements made from various materials and with a surface layer created by various technologies. In order to conduct the tribological tests in accordance with the above-mentioned method, a modified four-ball tester is used. In the article, the verification test results of steel friction couples lubricated with various oils and greases are presented. The presented testing equipment makes it possible to perform low-cost, low time-consuming tests with very high repeatability of the results and can constitute an experimental base for research and development works on the preparation of new materials and lubricants. The particular advantage of the introduced test equipment is the ability to be widely spread, thanks to the fact that it is based on a testing machine that is commonly used on an international scale.
