A model of cultural identity development under multiculturalism
Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2015, Vol 49, Issue 7
Abstract
The article presents the dynamic and changeable process of identity development in contemporary human beings. It emphasizes its unique character under multiculturalism - the phenomenon that takes place as a process. First, culturally different groups coexist. Then the ideologies and paradigms of coexistence are determined and put into action, and educational activities connected with putting accepted ideas and goals into practice and with developing appropriate attitudes toward otherness are initiated. Finally, a multidimensional identity – aimed at homogeneity, heterogeneity, assimilation or integration – is gained and consciously developed. The article presents a model of the dynamic and changeable process of cultural identity development where identity is treated as a subject's creative effort that eases tensions and contradictions between two types of elements: the elements that are permanent and inherited and that result from the subject's being socially ingrained in the family and local community, his or her identification with significant people and groups, and with indigenous symbols and values, and the elements that are changeable and acquired and that result from interactions with others.
