(De)socialization of the fine arts of the 20th and 21st centuries

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2015, Vol 49, Issue 7

Abstract

The Author attempts to show significant aspects of socialization and desocialization interweaving in the most important narratives in the fine (visual) arts of the 20th and 21st centuries. The subject of the study are the meanings that create the discourse present in the sociocultural field of the fine arts. At the beginning of the article, the Author describes the most important aspects of art as well as selected artistic phenomena (e.g. world of art, transgression, the narrative character of a work). The next part of the article explores the aspects of socialization and desocialization in artistic narratives with special emphasis put on the issues of shock and scandal, bodily meanings and sensations and different states of consciousness. The final part provides a macrostructural (systemic) look by showing the socialization functions of the visual arts of the 20th and 21st centuries. The final conclusion of the study can be summarized in the following way: artistic (de)socialization is interwoven in the social structure and makes cultural reproduction possible.
