“DIFFERENT WORLD? OR THEIR OWN UNKNOWN WORLD?” DEVELOPMENTAL POTENTIAL, OVEREXCITABILITY AND TALENTS

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2014, Vol 47, Issue 5

Abstract

The article aims to review fundamental issues and studies connected with talents according to Kazimierz Dąbrowski's concept. According to this theory, talents are understood as giftedness – a phenomenon connected with developmental potential which includes five types of overexcitability, intelligence, specific abilities and talents and unique personality traits. Psychomotor overexcitability, sensual overexcitability, intellectual overexcitability, imaginational overexcitability and emotional overexcitability - the three last ones in particular - have been considered the key characteristics of gifted individuals. The research on overexcitability with the use of the Overexcitability Questionnaire and the Overexcitability Questionnaire II conducted among highly gifted individuals showed different profiles of overexcitability depending on the type of talent, gender and age. Artists and intellectually gifted individuals showed a higher level of intellectual, imaginational and emotional overexcitabilities, women – a higher level of sensual and emotional overexcitabilities, and men – a higher level of psychomotor and intellectual overexcitabilities. Dominant types of overexcitability were also found in individuals with specific talents. Moreover, strong developmental potential causes an asynchronous development of highly gifted individuals.
