Synthetic model of prosocial motivations with the example of volunteering

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2015, Vol 49, Issue 7

Abstract

The Authors present concepts related to prosocial motivations, applying them to volunteering as a form of such behaviors. The analysis includes descriptive definitions of motivation for volunteering, theoretical and empirical models which describe motivation for helping others, and conceptions which explain the benefits of providing long-term assistance – as volunteering is usually considered such a form of assistance. The next part of the paper focuses on various differences that incline an individual to volunteer; for example, internal and external motivation, as well as egoistic and altruistic motivation. It also presents relationships between personal fulfillment and volunteering as personal fulfillment can be a factor that both triggers and reinforces volunteering. The final part presents a synthetic model of motivation for volunteering which covers all the aspects discussed in the paper. At present, this model is of a theoretical character, but it can be helpful in empirical research on this issue.
