A MÜKEYYİFAT (PLEASURE-INDUCING SUBSTANCES) DEBATE WRITTEN ON MARCH 3, 1750: MUHÂLEME-İ MÜKEYYİFÂT

Abstract

Muhâleme-i Mükeyyifât which is registered “Esad Efendi 3622” at Süleymaniye Library in Istanbul is a mükeyyifat (pleasure-inducing substances) debate in which eight pleasure-inducing substances dispute severely in order to become the favorite of the world. The pleasure-inducing substances in Muhâleme-i Mükeyyifât written on March 3, 1750 in Istanbul are opium, berş, marijuana, boza, wine, arrack, coffee and tobacco. Kahve-i cān-fezā who represents coffee wins the debate took place in a pavilion of Isret-abad field of Tahayyulat sanjak.
