Journal Title: Söylem Filoloji Dergisi - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
Süleyman Nazif is a poet who is a member of Servet-i Fünun community in terms of his sense of art. Besides his poems and a great deal of texts related to various issues, his letters have also a very significant place for his literary life. In this study, after a short explanation and evaluation part, Süleyman Nazif’s Al-Jazeera Letters is going to be analyzed with the intra-language translation. These letters are firstly published in a variety of magazines and newspapers and later formed into a book with a dedication to Abdullah Cevdet. In his five letters, Süleyman Nazif does not tell only the heartbreaking situation of people living in a region called Al-Jazeera by Arabs; but he also mentions the events which are closely related to the empire, such as Tırhala War which is lost from the beginning because of some desk-bound agreements. In the homeland, the concepts such as justice, right, law and equality are no longer spoken, it looks like they are out of circulation. In these five letters, Nazif tries to reflect the whole realities without hiding anything and also emphasize the things to do in a sincere manner.
