Journal Title: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PURE MEDICAL RESEARCH - Year 2018, Vol 3, Issue 5
Abstract
Purpose- To assess donor prole and quality of corneas obtained through Voluntary Eye-Donation and HCRP and determine awareness regarding eye donation in next-of-the-kin. Materials and Methods- A prospective comparative study was carried out by the Eye-Bank affiliated with a South Gujarat tertiary hospital over 2 years. The eyeballs collected on receiving an eyedonation call were grouped into Voluntary Eye-Donation and those obtained after motivating the relatives of donors hospitalized were grouped into HCRP. The awareness was assessed with a structured questionnaire. Results- 160 corneas from 80 donors were analysed. 71.2% were through VED while 28.8% through HCRP. The largest proportion of donors(18.8%) were between 71-80 years. The mean age was 57 ± 21 years(range 19-95 years). Male: Female=56:24.Majority of donors were from Mortuary(41.3%).Most common cause of death was Cardio-respiratory arrest(72.5%).45%, 32.5%, 15%, 6.3% and 1.3% were procured within 2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8 and after 8 hrs of death respectively.61.4% of corneas obtained through VED were usable, as compared to 89.1% through HCRP. 24% of those procured via HCRP were utilized as compared to 6.1% of those procured via VED. Conclusions-There is need to promote HCRP for procuring good quality corneas. Population awareness must be improved.
