A prospective study of hematological parameters in malaria
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 2
Abstract
Background and objectives: Malaria is a major health problem in India. Despite advances in knowledge, malaria continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality among all infectious diseases. Malaria causing organisms are parasites of blood and induce haematological alterations. The present study is intended to study the affects of different species of plasmodium on various haematological parameters viz anemia, thrombocytopenia, leucocytosis. Methods: In this study total 100 smear positive cases of malaria at Department of Pathology Navodaya Medical College, Raichur were examined. Their haematological parameters were measured using automated cell counter, peripheral blood smear examination and relevant clinical findings were recorded. Results: Of the 100 smear positive cases studied majority of the patients had either mild (47%) or moderate degree (46%) of anaemia. Severe anaemia was seen in 7% of the cases; mainly in falciparum infections. Decreased platelet counts were seen in both vivax and falciparum malaria; with 85% of the cases showing platelet count less than 1.5 lacs/dl and was more commonly associated with P.falciparum (46%). Degree of anaemia and extent of thrombocytopenia correlated with the parasite load. Conclusion: Various haematological changes can occur in both falciparum and vivax infections, most commonly anaemia and thrombocytopenia. These haematological findings can help in early diagnosis of malaria which is essential for timely and appropriate treatment which can limit the morbidity and prevent further complication.
