A rare case: malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of a nasal cavity

Journal Title: Polski Przegląd Otorynolaryngologiczny - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 4

Abstract

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are sarcomas which originate from peripheral nerves or from cells associated with the nerve sheath. MPNSTs comprise approximately 5–10% of all soft tissue sarcomas. They can occur either spontaneously or in association with neurofibromatosis-1 (NF1). They are usually deep-seated and often involve the proximal upper and lower extremities as well as the trunk. Because MPNSTs can arise from multiple cell types, the overall appearance can vary greatly from one case to the next. This can make diagnosis and classification somewhat difficult. The mainstay of treatment is surgical resection. Most of these tumors are considered high-grade sarcomas with the potential to recur as well as to metastasize. We present a very rare case a woman 51-years-old with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor localized in right nasal cavity.
