A Rare Case Report of Cavernous Hemangioma of Tongue
Journal Title: Gujarat Medical Journal - Year 2017, Vol 72, Issue 1
Abstract
INTRODUCTION This report describes a neonate who presented with swelling on the under surface of the tongue since birth, causing difficulty in sucking leading to feeding through nasogastric tube. A clinical diagnosis of hemangiolymphangioma was made. The swelling was causing significant functional disturbances and difficulty in feeding so surgical excision was carried out and swelling was sent for histopathological evaluation. METHOD: The case presented here is of 21 day old male baby with complaint of painless swelling over undersurface of left side of the tongue since birth; the swelling was 2.5 x 1.5 x 1cm in size with reddish blue colour, smooth surface and well defined margins. The swelling was excised and sent for HPE. ANALYSIS: Histopathological report showed dilated blood vessels having endothelial lining separated by collagenised fibrous tissue and lymphatic infiltrates suggestive of CAVERNOUSHEMANGIOMA. RESULT: Haemangioma are developmental benign vascular abnormalities and about 60 to 70% of lesions are found in neck but rarely in oral cavity. The pathophysiology of haemangioma is attributed to genetic and cellular factors mainly monocytes which are considered precursor of haemangioma endothelial cells. DISCUSSION: Haemangioma are developmental benign vascular abnormalities and about 60 to 70% of lesions are found in neck but rarely in oral cavity. The pathophysiology of haemangioma is attributed to genetic and cellular factors mainly monocytes which are considered precursor of haemangioma endothelial cells.
