A review on implantable drug delivery system

Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2017, Vol 5, Issue 4

Abstract

Implantable drug delivery systems (IDDS) are an example of such systems available for therapeutics use. The major advantages of these systems contain targeted local delivery of drugs at a constant rate, fewer drugs required to treat the disease state, minimization probable side effects, and better efficacy of treatment. There was need for delivery systems that could maintain a steady release of drug to the specific site of action. Implantable drug delivery devices over conventional oral or parenteral dosage form. First, allow to site specific drug action administration where the drug is needed most. Examples include implants used in the treatment of the brain tumors or prostate cancer. Some of the most recently discovered implants are in the early developmental stages and more rigorous clinical testing is required prior to their use in standard practice.
