Journal Title: Stanley Medical Journal - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 1
Abstract
Context: Breast cancer is the leading malignancy affecting women worldwide. In India, it is the second most common cancer. Breast cancer has a better survival rate if identified in the initial stages. Breast self examination (BSE) is a do-athome procedure which aids in early detection of breast cancer. Aims: To assess the knowledge and practice regarding breast self examination and the factors associated with the practice among women between 30 to 60 years attending a tertiary care hospital in Chennai. Methods and Material: This cross sectional study was carried out among 563 randomly selected women between 30-60 years attending Govt Hospital for a period of three months, by a face to face interview using a pretested, structured questionnaire containing questions on awareness on breast cancer and awareness and practice of breast self examination. Those aware of the procedure of BSE were asked to demonstrate the same under strict privacy. Data was entered into Excel and statistical analysis was done using SPSS v.21 Results: Of the 563 women, only 199 women (35.5%) were aware of breast self examination. Among them, it was found that only 55 (28%) practiced BSE, of whom 36 (65%) participants demonsrated the procedure correctly. Conclusions: The awareness and practice among women attending a tertiary care hospital was poor. Continuous reinforcement and education about the procedure is likely to bring about a positive change, helping them to detect breast cancer and other breast problems early and improve their quality of life
